Overview
Canyon Creek Loop provides a complete circuit through the lower Clearwater Mountains near Kooskia, a shorter and more accessible option than the longer wilderness routes deeper in the Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forest. The 5-mile loop gains 800 feet, spending roughly half its distance in the creek canyon and the other half on a ridge with views of the Clearwater River valley.
The loop format is well-suited to visitors who want to experience two distinct terrain types in a single outing. The creek section is the more intimate half, running through dense Douglas fir and alder forest with constant water sound and good habitat for wildlife. The ridge section is the more expansive half, where the forest opens and the valley geography becomes apparent.
The trail is a practical option for visitors based in Kooskia or Kamiah who want a forest hike without committing to the longer drive into the Lochsa or Selway corridors. It is also a good choice for hikers who want to test their legs before attempting the more demanding routes in the forest.
Check current trail conditions with the Lochsa Ranger District before visiting. The canyon section can be affected by high water in spring, and the forest road to the trailhead can be muddy after rain.
The Route
Miles 0 to 2.5: Canyon Creek Section
The loop begins at the Canyon Creek Trailhead (approximately 3,200 feet) and descends slightly to the creek before following it upstream northeast. The creek corridor is dense and green, with Douglas fir, alder, and vine maple lining both banks. The trail stays close to the water, crossing it twice on maintained log bridges.
Several deep pools in the creek are visible from the trail. Dippers are common in this section, bobbing on rocks and diving for aquatic invertebrates. The climbing is gentle through the canyon, with most of the 800 feet of gain saved for the ridge return.
Miles 2.5 to 5.0: Ridge Return
At the upper end of the canyon section, the loop climbs a ridge on the south side of the creek and returns along the top. The gain in this section is the steepest on the loop, but the distance is short. From the ridge (approximately 4,000 feet), views open across the Clearwater drainage toward the mountains to the north.
The descent from the ridge returns to the trailhead on a gentle gradient through more open forest than the canyon approach.
When to Visit
May through October. The low starting elevation and the canyon orientation mean this trail opens earlier than high-country routes, often by late April or early May. October brings fall color in the deciduous trees along the creek.
What to Bring
Many hikers on this loop carry:
- 1-2 liters of water; the creek provides sources, but carry enough to traverse the dry ridge section
- A water filter for creek sources
- Layers for the ridge section
- Insect repellent in late spring
Individual needs vary.
Practical Details
No permit required as of 2026. No trailhead facilities. Cell service absent. Dispersed camping in the forest. Dogs allowed on leash.
Leave No Trace principles apply throughout.
